The Ethereum Name Service (ENS), is launching a new domain name extension dubbed .box sometime next month.
According to ENS the .box domain extension will be the first blockchain-native domain name system (DNS) that will also be a routable Top-level Domain (TLD). Thus, .box domain names will be blockchain-based internet domain names that Ethereum users can use to direct links to websites and send emails.
The .box domain names will also apparently be subject to the rules/regulations of the International Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), including domain name arbitration proceedings (UDRP and URS, for example) that will allow third parties and government entities to step in if the domain names are being used for fraudulent or infringing purposes.
The launch of the .box domain names is worth watching and we are also interested to see what the effect of a blockchain-based domain name will be on scams that involve crypto currency, and how these domains names may be utilized for such purposes.
